Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma marked International Tiger Day on July 29 by highlighting the state\u2019s progress in tiger conservation, saying Assam has become a leading model for habitat management and wildlife protection through sustained conservation efforts.<\/span><\/h4>\n

He made the remarks in a post on X, underlining the significance of coordinated action to safeguard the species and its habitat.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sarma described India\u2019s broader tiger conservation strategy as \u201ca remarkable success\u201d and credited Assam\u2019s contribution to that outcome. He pointed to rigorous anti-poaching operations, active preservation of wildlife corridors and the adoption of technology-driven surveillance as key measures that have strengthened protection for tigers across the state.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Chief Minister said Assam\u2019s wild tiger population has shown steady growth over the past few years, singling out Nameri Tiger Reserve as a major conservation achievement. According to Sarma, Nameri\u2019s tiger numbers have risen four-fold, increasing from three to 12 animals, a change he presented as evidence of effective local management and protection efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sarma also highlighted the role of other protected areas \u2014 Kaziranga, Manas and Orang, alongside Nameri \u2014 in providing secure habitats for the Royal Bengal Tiger, stressing that a network of well-managed reserves and corridors is essential to the species\u2019 long-term survival.<\/span><\/p>\n
