
The Karimganj District Court has sentenced Samsul Haque to 10 years of imprisonment and fined him Rs 10,000 for a 2019 acid attack. District and Sessions Judge Rouchan Ara Rahman handed down the verdict after nearly four years of legal proceedings. Haque attacked Rukiya Begum in Tilabari, Patharkandi, under the pretense of buying a dog, leading to his prosecution following her complaint.

Earlier, on August 1, Md. Abdul Jalil from Moritoli, Morigaon District, was sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor. Additional Sessions Judge-cum-Special Judge (POCSO), N. A. Ahmed, delivered the verdict under Section 376AB of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), with an additional Rs 20,000 fine. Failure to pay will result in an extra six months of imprisonment. Jalil was acquitted of charges under Section 366 IPC.
