A senior member of the NSCN-K (YA), a militant group, was captured in a coordinated operation by the Indian Army, Assam Rifles, and Assam Police in Charaideo district. Identified as David Konyak, the militant was detained in Namtola on Monday evening, marking a significant breakthrough for the security forces. Konyak’s arrest follows extensive intelligence efforts, as he was implicated in various extortion and abduction incidents along the Assam-Nagaland border. This is seen as a major blow to the group’s activities in the region.
NSCN-K (YA) is a breakaway faction from the original NSCN-K, formed in August 2018 under the leadership of Yung Aung, a Myanmarese national. Among the six factions that have arisen from the splintering of the Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (NSCN), this group has gained notoriety for extorting local businesses in Charaideo.
The NSCN and its factions are known for their slogan “Nagaland for Christ” and strive to establish a sovereign state of Nagalim, encompassing Naga-inhabited areas in India and northern Myanmar. They operate a government-in-exile called the Government of the People’s Republic of Nagaland, with activities spanning Nagaland and neighboring states such as Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Manipur, as well as parts of northern Myanmar.
