The Meghalaya government has expressed serious concerns regarding security weaknesses along the Indo-Bangladesh border after armed intruders from Bangladesh reportedly attempted to rob and abduct a villager in the South West Khasi Hills earlier this month. Officials disclosed that the perpetrators capitalized on the unfenced sections of the 444 km border, nearly 20% of which remains vulnerable to such incursions.

Unfenced Border Sparks Bangladeshi Intrusion and Abduction in Meghalaya:

In response to the incident on August 8, the state government formed a three-member panel to evaluate the situation. This committee, which includes Vice Chairman of the Border Areas Development Committee Kitborlang Nongrem, former MLA Himalaya M Shangpliang, and Mendiapbar legislator Marthon J Sangma, visited affected villages such as Khonjoy, Rongdangjiri, and Maheshkhola.

During the inspection, villagers reported that Bangladeshi groups were using hidden pathways and porous areas of the border to engage in illegal activities. Sangma noted after the visit that “though BSF outposts exist, certain stretches of the border remain unguarded due to hilly terrain and lack of fencing, which the intruders have exploited.”

The delegation highlighted the use of clandestine entry routes near Maheshkhola and urgently urged authorities to secure these vulnerable areas. They warned that such infiltrations pose significant threats to residents, especially women and children. The findings will be included in a report submitted to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.

On the day of the incident, at least eight armed intruders entered Rongdangjiri village and attempted to abduct a local resident. Their actions led to property vandalism and injuries to a civilian. A joint operation by the BSF, Meghalaya Police, and Village Defence Parties resulted in the capture of one suspect, identified as Akram from Sherpur in Bangladesh, who was apprehended while receiving treatment for injuries sustained during the clash.

During the investigation, security forces recovered a Bangladeshi ID card, wireless sets, handcuffs, and weapons from the intruders. Locals voiced their outrage, asserting that repeated violations of the border have gone unchecked despite prior reports.

While nearly 80% of the Indo-Bangladesh border in the area is fenced, the remaining open stretches continue to facilitate illegal crossings. Officials acknowledged ongoing challenges related to completing the fencing due to difficult terrain and land disputes.

The state government has assured residents that measures will be reinforced to enhance security and prevent further threats to border communities.
