In a solemn response to the gruesome murder of a 49-year-old woman on Lumding Road, Diphu, the Karbi Nimso Chingthur Asong (KNCA), a prominent Karbi women’s organization in Karbi Anglong, organized a candlelight vigil. The vigil aimed to honor the victim and express solidarity with her grieving family.

The horrific incident occurred on Wednesday evening, approximately 4 kilometers from Diphu town. The victim, who had been missing since Tuesday, was found brutally murdered while returning home from a jhum cultivation site. According to family members, she was discovered with her hands tied, clothes torn, and showing signs of severe physical assault.
Participating in the candlelight vigil, KNCA General Secretary Kajek Tokbipi expressed profound sorrow and outrage. “It is an extremely unfortunate incident where a woman has been brutally murdered. We condemn this shameless act in the strongest possible terms,” Tokbipi stated. She highlighted the alarming rise in cases of alleged rape and murder in recent times, pointing out the lack of security for women in the region.
“Women are increasingly scared to move freely as their lives are not secure. The inaction of the law and order authorities in swiftly nabbing the culprits is deeply concerning,” Tokbipi added. The KNCA urged the authorities to take prompt action in arresting the perpetrators and ensuring stringent punishment. They also called for enhanced measures to safeguard women’s security in the area.
Earlier in the day, the KNCA submitted a memorandum to the District Commissioner of Karbi Anglong, Nirola Phangchopi, demanding swift action in arresting the culprits. A copy of the memorandum was also handed over to the Superintendent of Police of Karbi Anglong, Sanjib Kr. Saikia, urging immediate arrests and enhanced safety measures for women.
This tragic incident has left the community in deep shock and mourning. The candlelight vigil served as a powerful reminder of the urgent need for justice and improved security for women in Karbi Anglong. The KNCA’s efforts to bring attention to this issue underscore the critical importance of community activism in addressing such heinous crimes.
