In Guwahati, tensions have escalated between the BJP and Congress following a recent firing incident involving a BJP MLA’s vehicle in Samaguri. The BJP accused the Congress of orchestrating the attack to disrupt peace and influence the upcoming Samaguri by-election on November 13. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma condemned the incident, alleging that Congress resorted to violence to intimidate BJP members and safeguard their voter base, asserting that justice would be served to preserve the democratic process.
The attack reportedly took place on Saturday night in Mari Puthikhaiti village, targeting the vehicle of BJP MLA Jitu Goswami post-campaigning. Fortunately, no injuries resulted from the alleged gunfire. The BJP has insisted that the shot emanated from a Congress supporter’s residence.
In response, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, led by President Bhupen Kumar Borah, denied the charges and criticized the BJP government for disturbing Assam’s democratic environment and attempting to seize power. He accused a group of BJP activists of assaulting Congress supporters and candidate Tanzil Hussain earlier, suggesting the BJP is manipulating state resources to secure an electoral win.
Accusations have been exchanged from both parties, with BJP’s Samaguri candidate Diplu Ranjan Sarma expressing confusion and frustration over Congress’s alleged actions. Meanwhile, cabinet minister Bimal Borah and other BJP leaders have called for action by submitting a memorandum to the Nagaon district commissioner.
As both parties prepare for the by-election, the political atmosphere remains charged, with each party vying to assert control and preserve peace in the region amidst these allegations. The situation underscores the broader tensions and stakes involved as both seek to sway the electorate in a fiercely contested constituency.
