Strengthening Heritage: Assam CM Launches Development Projects to Preserve Sattra Culture

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Barpeta to launch a series of development projects aimed at preserving and promoting Sattra culture, a significant part of the state’s spiritual and cultural heritage. The initiatives focus on enhancing infrastructure at historically significant religious sites linked to the Vaishnavite tradition.

During his visit, Sarma began at Patbaushi Srimanta Sankardeva Than, participating in religious rituals before initiating development work. He laid the foundation stones for infrastructure projects at both Patbaushi Srimanta Sankardeva Than and Shri Shri Dev Damodar Guru’s Adi Dham Patbaushi Sattra. These sites are integral to the spiritual and cultural legacy of Vaishnavite saints Srimanta Sankardeva and Damodar Dev.

The Chief Minister announced a Rs 10 crore project for the infrastructural development of Patbaushi Sattra, followed by the foundation stone-laying ceremony for a Rs 7 crore development project at Chinpara Bhithita, where Srimanta Sankardeva is believed to have first set foot in Barpeta. The Assam government’s efforts aim to safeguard the heritage of these sacred sites, ensuring their preservation for future generations. Historically, Srimanta Sankardeva spent a significant part of his life at Patbaushi Sattra, composing many of his literary and devotional works.

As the Chief Minister laid the foundation stones, he emphasized the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of Barpeta. His words echoed the sentiment of the locals, who are proud of their rich legacy and keen to see it thrive for generations to come. The projects, worth a total of Rs 17 crore, are expected to be completed within a year. The state government’s efforts will undoubtedly go a long way in preserving the spiritual and cultural heritage of the region and keep it alive for future generations to cherish.
