An alleged robbery suspect sustained serious injuries after Assam Police personnel opened fire during an operation in an interior location under the Tulsibari Police Outpost in Rangia, amid the Durga Puja festivities. The injured individual, identified as Janmehmud, alias Mela, was shot in the left leg and subsequently admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Changsari for medical treatment.
According to preliminary information, Mela was suspected of involvement in multiple robbery cases and was allegedly a key figure behind a series of such incidents in the area. The operation was launched as part of an intensified crackdown on a robbery network operating in the Rangia region during the festive period.

The police firing came just a day after Rangia Police chased and arrested one of Mela’s alleged associates in connection with a vehicle robbery case. Following that arrest, law enforcement intensified efforts to trace and apprehend other suspects linked to the same case. Police personnel had been on alert since the previous evening as part of the coordinated operation to capture those allegedly involved in the robberies.
Authorities have yet to release further details regarding the exact circumstances that led to the firing and the full extent of the accused’s alleged involvement in the cases.
