Diphu: Green zone, Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong hill district has successfully prevented spread of dreaded corona virus till now, partly due to its premeditated location, sparingly distributed population, conventional lifestyle and providential mercy.
The cyclonic squall, originating from the Arabian Sea has unleashed wide scale destruction in both Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong autonomous hill districts on Thursday last. Areas spread in both the hill district with hard-hit pockets like Vothung Aji ,Chokihola, Umswai , Dhansiri etc. the storm left trails of destruction and ruin. Thousands of bamboo houses with tin roof, storage place, food grains and other household properties have been destroyed in the insensitive storm.
The rainstorm which occurred in the midst of the nationwide lockdown and corona virus pandemic has doubled the misery of the general people who are craving for food are now obligated for cloth and shelter. “We don’t have any stock of food grains our rice, vegetables and other food stuffs have been blown away by the storm,” said a distressed man of Dhansiri, whose house was blustered away by the brutal airstream.
The storm has particularly affected Eastern parts of Karbi Anglong including Diphu revenue circle, thousands of prefabricated huts have been flattened, torn and twisted tin roofs waft away, storm effected people have appealed to already overburdened Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council for urgent assistance.
Meanwhile according to information received lately number of family units, numbering around 200 individuals occupied in small tea firms, located within general area of Dolamara, Bokajan subdivision have pleaded to Assam government and Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council authority for rushing food item, as the stranded laborers are out of job since March 24 and cannot venture outside for procurement of ration.
According to new directive of government regarding resumption of works in the tea plantation, only a small number of workers have been engaged by the management that too for three days in a week, parting bulk of the workforce from service.
According to the suffering tea workers around 10 to15 kilograms of rice was provided to them by government to each unlisted family, the ration card holders who received rice under PDS last month have exhausted their stock with two more weeks of lockdown ahead.
Amid the continuing lockdown few large-hearted person have come to salvage the trapped people in West Karbi Anglong. One of them is Doctor Bikramson Terang and his family, the concerned family distributed food items among the starving people of Rongkuroi Rongrupath area by providing essential food items and medical aid. Dr. Bikramson and his wife Roselyn Taropi give 5 kilograms of rice, pulses and mustard oil to 95 families of the village. Dr. Terang urged upon the villagers to abide by the precautionary guidelines and maintaining proper hygiene, social distancing to restrict spread of the dreaded corona virus.
