Two cattle thieves injured in police firing in Assam:

“They tried to hit the police personnel and flee from the scene. The police then fired six rounds and two of them were injured. Bullets hit their legs,”

Two suspected cattle thieves were injured in police firing when they allegedly tried to flee from a checkpoint in Lakhimpur district of Assam, officials said on Thursday.
     According to senior officials, a truck carrying 30 cattle was asked to stop at a checkpoint under the Dholpur outpost of Lakhimpur district on Wednesday night.
 “They tried to hit the police personnel and flee from the scene. The police then fired six rounds and two of them were injured. Bullets hit their legs,” the official said.

     Three more suspected cattle smugglers managed to flee from the scene taking advantage of the darkness, he added.
     The injured duo have been sent to Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
     Altogether 42 people have been killed and at least 104 injured in police action while allegedly trying to flee from custody or attacking the personnel since the BJP government, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, assumed office in May 2021.
     The rising number of shoot-outs whipped up a political furore with the opposition alleging that the Assam Police has turned “trigger happy” and is indulging in “open killings” under the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led regime.
     On March 28, the Assam Government informed the state Assembly that death or injury to the suspected criminals is “not new” if they try to escape from custody or attack the personnel.
     Defending police firing on criminals while purportedly trying to flee or attack the police, the state government maintained that police will continue to act “tough” against the accused.
