Guwahati : A declared foreigner who was inmate in the detention camp inside Goalpara District Jail in lower Assam has died following illness, said the Jail authorities on Tuesday.
The inmate identified as Nikhil Barman aged 66 years was admitted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital on November four due to lung ailment Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and died in the Hospital on Saturday last, the authorities said.
Barman was an inmate of the detention camp in Goalpara district from November 29, 2016 after he was declared a foreigner by a Foreigners Tribunal that year, the sources said.
His last rites were performed on Saturday last at Tengaguri of Dudhnoi in the district where Barman was a resident till he was taken to the detention camp, his family members said.
Earlier the family of another declared Foreigner – Dulal Paul (65) – housed in Tezpur detention camp had refused to accept his body
after he died in GMCH on October 14 last alleging due to the government’s improper handling of the foreigners’ issue he had to go behind the bar and died under unwanted circumstances.
On October 15 a magisterial enquiry was ordered by Sonitpur district administration into death of Paul who was declared a Bangaladeshi by a Foreigners Tribunal in 2017.
