Guwahati : A Japanese student here on an exchange programme allegedly committed suicide in a hostel of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati on Thursday by hanging himself from a ventilator window, said a spokesperson of the premier technology institute.
The student identified as Kota Onoda (22) was found hanging from the ventilator of the bathroom attached to his room in the international students wing in Lohit Hostel around 3.30 pm, the spokesperson said.
Onoda, a masters programme student in Gifu University in Japan, was on an exchange programme to IIT-G and was undergoing internship in the Bio Science Bio Engineering department for a semester that was to end on November 30, he said.
A delegation of Gifu University that had visited IIT-G yesterday and was in Guwahati today as well as the Ministry of External Affairs were informed by the Institute authorities about the incident.
Meanwhile, police has arrived at the spot and conducting investigations, the spokesman added.
