Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated on Thursday that the state is still a long way from achieving self-sufficiency in egg and meat production. Sarma made these remarks while attending the closing ceremony of the College of Veterinary Science’s Platinum Jubilee Celebration. He further announced the upcoming launch of a State Health Mission specifically for the veterinary sector.

Sarma emphasized the need to develop an ecosystem that would unlock the state’s growth potential in these areas. He also highlighted the importance of increasing milk production to meet the country’s demand by 2030, stating that Assam has significant room for growth in this sector. Sarma noted that compared to other states like Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh, the Northeastern region, including Assam, has yet to fully exploit the opportunities presented by the agriculture sector. To compete with these states, he stressed the importance of building an entrepreneurial ecosystem.
The Chief Minister encouraged students studying agricultural and veterinary sciences in Assam to focus on becoming creators of job opportunities rather than merely seeking employment. Although he did not provide further details, Sarma mentioned that a State Health Mission similar to the National Health Mission would be implemented for the veterinary sector in the near future.
