The recent rape of a girl in Gossaigaon continues to stir outrage in the region. Various organizations and associations have called for urgent action. Kabita Basumatary, Kokrajhar district president of the Bharatiya Janata Party, expressed grave concern over the incident. Basumatary led a team to Kokrajhar Sadar Police Station, demanding swift police intervention to apprehend and punish the culprits.
Reorewa Narzihari, an Executive Member of the Bodoland Territorial Council, also condemned the act and called for severe punishment. Multiple organizations, including the Bodo National Students Union and All Assam Tribal Students Union, voiced strong opposition, demanding the accused be hanged to set a stern example. Protesters urged local police to arrest the remaining suspects within 24 hours.
The incident comes amidst heightened sensitivity in Assam due to a similar case in Dhing, Nagaon. In Gossaigaon, a gang of around eight men kidnapped two girls; the police have arrested three of the accused. One victim, raped by the kidnappers, remains critical and under medical care. The community’s collective anger has intensified, with calls for stringent punishment for the perpetrators.
Local police are actively searching for the other suspects and interrogating individuals connected to the case. The region remains tense as residents and various groups demand justice for the victims and swift action against the accused. The situation underscores the urgent need for stronger measures to ensure women’s safety and justice.
