Assam Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has called on the state government to rename Silchar Railway Station in honor of the eleven language martyrs, also known as Bhasha Sahids, of Silchar. The Jorhat MP, who also serves as the deputy leader of the Congress Party in the Lok Sabha, believes this gesture would be a fitting tribute to the martyrs’ significant role in the 1961 Language Movement in Barak Valley.

In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gogoi underscored the importance of this renaming initiative, arguing that it would duly honor the martyrs’ legacy. Despite Gogoi’s appeal, a recent response from the Union Government indicates that the BJP-led Assam government has not yet submitted a formal proposal for this name change.
