An assistant teacher at a government primary school in Assam’s Dhubri district was arrested on Tuesday, February 24, after guardians alleged he showed objectionable images to minor students inside a classroom. The accused, Abdul Khaleque, serves at 989 No. Rashtrabhasha Hindi Primary School in the Balurchar area and was taken into custody by Dhubri Sadar Police following complaints from parents.
The incident emerged after several pupils returned home visibly upset and told their families what had happened. According to the complaints, Khaleque allegedly used his mobile phone during school hours to display explicit and inappropriate images to children inside the classroom.
Alarmed parents approached Ward Commissioner Joydeb Krishna Paul and demanded immediate action to protect their children. Paul visited the school on Tuesday morning and formally notified headteacher Rakesh Roy about the allegations. Word of the accusations quickly spread and a large number of guardians assembled at the campus, leading to tense scenes and protests.
With public anger mounting, school authorities and the ward commissioner summoned police. Officers from Dhubri Sadar Police Station arrived and took Khaleque into custody; he was escorted from the school amid slogans calling for strict punishment. Many parents described the alleged act as a betrayal of the trust placed in teachers, especially at a school established in 1949 and regarded as one of the oldest and most respected institutions in the 3 No. Balurchar area. “A teacher is meant to be a guardian and a role model. For such an act to happen in a school that has shaped generations since 1949 is a deep stain on society,” one distressed parent said.
Police have registered a case and are interrogating the accused at Dhubri Sadar Police Station. Ward Commissioner Paul has urged a thorough investigation, including a forensic examination of the teacher’s mobile phone to verify the allegations. Headteacher Rakesh Roy has told guardians that a formal report will be sent to the District Elementary Education Officer (DEEO) seeking permanent disciplinary action under service rules. Local leaders have also called for stricter monitoring of mobile-phone use by teaching and non-teaching staff during school hours to safeguard the mental well-being and security of minor students.
