Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) chief Hagrama Mohilary on June 30 said there would be no eviction drive in the BTC region and that 93 families reportedly occupying government land would instead be rehabilitated, officials said. Mohilary made the announcement after a review meeting in Kajalgaon in Chirang district, stressing that the administration’s priority is to find housing and relief measures rather than resorting to forcible removals.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Mohilary reiterated the administration’s stance: “There will be no eviction in the BTC region. The government will make arrangements to rehabilitate the 93 affected families.” The families were described in official remarks as allegedly on government land; the chief’s statement indicates a shift toward solutions focused on resettlement and welfare.
The review meeting examined the functioning and progress of the Panchayat and Rural Development, the Public Works Department (PWD), and the Municipal Administration. Senior officials from these departments attended and presented updates on the implementation of various government schemes and local development projects, according to participants.
On the proposed grant of Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to six communities in Assam, Mohilary said he had no objection in principle, while underlining the need to protect existing entitlements. “It is a positive step, but the interests of the existing Scheduled Tribe communities must be protected while extending the status to new communities so that everyone benefits,” he said.
In a lighter moment, Mohilary made a tongue-in-cheek prediction about the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying Argentina would reach the semi-finals but France would ultimately lift the trophy. The BTC chief addressed reporters immediately after concluding the review in Kajalgaon.
