Assam Rifles personnel recovered 250.21 grams of heroin, valued at more than Rs 1.87 crore, during an anti-narcotics operation near the India–Myanmar border in Mizoram’s Champhai district, officials said.
Acting on specific intelligence about suspected drug movements, troops laid an ambush along the Tiau River in the Vangkai area of Zokhawthar on August 30. The operation was aimed at intercepting suspected cross-border consignments, officials added.
During the ambush, soldiers observed a woman wading across the river carrying a green polybag. After she placed the bag on the riverbank, she reportedly signalled to a person waiting nearby on a scooter.
Both individuals fled on noticing the presence of Assam Rifles personnel: the woman allegedly moved back toward Myanmar while the other person sped away on the scooter, abandoning the polybag on the bank.
A search of the abandoned bag produced 250.21 grams of heroin, which authorities estimate to be worth over Rs 1.87 crore. The seized narcotics were handed over to the Excise and Narcotics Department in Champhai for further investigation and legal action, officials said.
