Two villagers were killed and two others wounded after suspected cadres of the NSCN‑IM and ZUF‑K allegedly opened fire on N Teikhang Kuki village in Kangpokpi district, Manipur, on Monday morning. The attack, reported at around 9.30 am under the T Waichong sub‑division, also saw several houses set ablaze and residents fleeing amid the gunfire, local sources said.
The dead were identified as Lamtinthang, who was reportedly shot during the assault, and Neichin, the wife of Tongpao. Seilun sustained a bullet wound to his thigh, and another woman, Nemneichong, was also injured. According to villagers’ accounts, Lamtinthang was killed while his father, Seilun, was among those hit; the injured were taken for medical treatment.
Witnesses said the attackers fired indiscriminately at residents and torched multiple homes, prompting people to flee into surrounding areas. The incident occurred in the remote Twilang belt along the IT Road, a corridor that local sources describe as strategically important and increasingly volatile.
The shooting is the latest in a series of armed confrontations and firing incidents reported in the wider Twilang area in recent weeks. Locals say the violence has disrupted movement and hindered access to essential commodities and healthcare in the isolated belt, exacerbating fears among villagers.
The attack has reignited concerns about civilian safety along the IT Road, where settlements remain vulnerable to armed clashes and potential retaliation. Security arrangements in Kangpokpi are expected to come under renewed scrutiny as authorities assess the incident and the wider security situation, officials and residents said.
