Diphu: Several places of West Karbi Anglong have inundated by deluge of River Kopili and its territories as heavy battered the whole district along with neighboring state of Meghalaya. The water level of Kopili River is flowing well above the danger mark forcing several villages of comparably low areas to abandon their home. According to reports flood water submerged the area around 3:00am in the morning yesterday.


Incessant downpour since last two days in entire Hamren valley and at the catchment of Kopili has brim over its bank submerging numerous villages rendering many families dispossessed and loss of personal properties.
Some of the worst affected villages are Menmeji, Deramukh, Lalmati, Chitolijan, Kollongamukh, Bithung Sapori, Mugasong, Hatimura, Taradubi, Namtaradubi, Barman Gaon, Gondabil, Jalpara, Wakanta, Chongkan, East Bhellapara, Kulaigroup, Sildubi, Tarapung and Satgaon. Villagers told media that the water level increased at once for which, they did not get the time to shift their belongings to highland; hundreds of domestic cattle have been washed away by surge.
“Our immediate concern is safety of our family and poultry and food right now, we are less concerned with the COVID 19 guidelines,” said one effected person whose house and properties has been sluiced by flood water.
Effected people have alleged that the abrupt increase of the water level was not only due to rainfall, but to a certain extent due to the release of water from Umrongso and Khandong dam of the Kopili Hydro-Electric Project.
There was disproportionate rise in the water level of the reservoir forcing the authority to release certain quantum of water to save the barrier from contravene. This has actually caused the flash flood in valley areas of West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts. Particularly Tumpering and Donkamukam has remained cut off from Hojai since yesterday.
Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council’s Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang earlier deputed a team comprising Member of Autonomous Council Chandra Bahadur Chetri and Board Chairman of Veterinary & Dairy Development Ditolal Hasnu to assess the extent of damage in Bithung-Rengthama locality.
The deputation assured the effected people that the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council will send immediate relief for the affected people. According to preliminary review around one thousand houses have been submerged in the first bout of flood in either banks of River Kopili and Bithung Rengthama region of West Karbi Anglong.
Tuliram Ronghang has rushed to the affected area today to provide emergency relief to the affected people he talked with the Deputy Commissioner of West Karbi Anglong and asked him to take prompt measures to provide passable amenities to the affected people at the earliest. He was accompanied by Mr Amarsing Tisso Executive member Water Resource Department, Agriculture, Excise, Land Revenue etc, government officers and local leaders.
