Drugs valued at over Rs 35 crore were burnt by Assam’s Morigaon police as a part of its fight against the menace while heroin worth Rs seven crore was seized from Karbi Anglong on Friday, police said.
The drugs, seized during various operations since May 2021, were set ablaze at a brick kiln in Hekenamra area of the district to avoid air pollution in the town area.
Morigaon Superintendent of Police Aparna Natarajan told mediapersons that the district police has so far registered 118 cases against drug traffickers, besides seizure of huge quantities of various drugs.
She said that the seized drugs related to the disposed cases were burnt today with the permission of the local Court.
The drugs destroyed include 3.3 kgs of heroin, 150 kgs of ganja, one thousand bottles of cough syrup and five thousand tablets.
The value of the destroyed drugs was valued at over Rs 35 crore in the market.
In another incident in Karbi Anglong district, two persons from a neighbouring state were arrested and one kg of heroin worth over Rs seven crore was seized from Lahorijan area bordering Nagaland, police said.
Acting on a tip-off, a police patrolling team stopped a father-son duo and seized the drugs, kept in 79 soap boxes, from a vegetable sack they were carrying.
