The Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma clarified the government’s stance on the Silsako eviction controversy. He stressed that the eviction was essential to enable the drainage of excess water and prevent flooding in Guwahati. He denied any personal interest in the land and emphasized the larger public interest.
The Chief Minister categorically stated that he has no ownership or involvement in any land or property in Silsako and no ongoing government schemes are linked to the area. He further elaborated that the government’s aim is to create a channel for water to flow, reducing the chronic problem of waterlogging and floods in Guwahati. In view of this noble endeavour, he appealed to the citizens of Guwahati to support the government for its efforts in ensuring their welfare.
Referring to previous cases of eviction, the Chief Minister wondered why the Silsako eviction was treated differently. He pointed out that during previous massive evictions, there was hardly any protest or political intervention. However, the situation has been different in Silsako, with some political parties showing increased interest in the 150 affected families. Expressing confusion, the Chief Minister sought to know the underlying motives for this selective concern.
