In a significant operation against the illegal trade of Burmese supari (betel nuts), the Assam Rifles conducted a series of successful raids in neighboring states of Manipur and Nagaland. Based on confidential intelligence, the security forces intercepted multiple trucks loaded with contraband along the National Highway 29 near Kohima.
On a bustling Tuesday, Assam Rifles personnel meticulously carried out their operation, resulting in the seizure of trucks filled with approximately 120 tons of Burmese supari. The market value of the confiscated goods is estimated to be around 14.32 crore Indian Rupees. In the course of these operations, the drivers of the trucks were also detained under suspicion of transporting the contraband.
Manipur: Another Hotspot for Supari Seizures
Parallel to the actions in Nagaland, Assam Rifles cracked down on the illegal supari trade in Manipur as well. In the Kangpokpi district’s Kangpat area, security forces seized two trucks loaded with supari and arrested the drivers. The total weight of the seized supari in these vehicles was about 19.2 tons, with an estimated market value of approximately 2.304 crore Indian Rupees.
Further intensifying their efforts, the Assam Rifles undertook another operation in the Kangpokpi area, resulting in the seizure of two more supari-laden trucks and an additional truck filled with timber. The combined value of the seized supari and timber from these trucks is approximately 3.16 crore Indian Rupees, striking a significant blow to the illicit trade networks in the region.
The series of seizures by the Assam Rifles not only disrupts the illegal supari trade but also sends a strong message to those involved in smuggling activities across state borders.
