A disturbing revelation has emerged from a child observation home in Jorhat, where 13 out of 77 children have tested HIV positive, according to a report released on Wednesday. This alarming statistic has intensified concerns about the rising incidence of HIV in certain areas of the district.
In response, the state health department has promptly arranged for medical support and treatment for the affected children. Pankaj Borah, the Additional District Commissioner of Jorhat, expressed deep concern over the situation. “The increase in HIV cases, especially when 13 out of 77 children in the observation home are found to be positive, is highly alarming,” Borah stated.
Borah emphasized the connection between drug abuse and HIV, noting that the observation home houses two categories of children – those who are neglected and those involved in anti-social activities. “Many children engaged in anti-social activities are also drug addicts. The intersection of drug use, HIV, and anti-social behavior presents a troubling scenario,” he explained.
Survey reports corroborate Borah’s concerns, indicating that a majority of HIV-positive children in observation homes are drug users, often involving the injection of drugs. Further surveys have also identified HIV-positive cases in tea gardens along the Assam-Nagaland border, where unsafe sexual practices are significantly contributing to the infections.
The escalating situation underscores an urgent need for enhanced public health measures and increased awareness to combat the spread of HIV in the region. Comprehensive approaches addressing drug addiction and unsafe sexual practices are essential to curbing this public health crisis and safeguarding vulnerable populations.
