Renowned tabla virtuoso Ustad Zakir Hussain passed away on December 15 in the United States at the age of 73, following a two-week battle with heart and lung complications in the ICU. His death marks the end of an illustrious musical journey that transcended boundaries, cultures, and generations, leaving an enduring legacy honored by fans and personalities worldwide.
Tributes have flooded social media, highlighting his universal impact on music. Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia expressed his condolences on X, emphasizing that Hussain’s music spoke a “universal language” and that his rhythm will “echo in our hearts forever.” Industrialist Harsh Goenka also penned a heartfelt tribute, recalling Hussain’s global influence and personal connection through performances at his home.
Throughout his career, Ustad Zakir Hussain was celebrated with numerous accolades. He was honored with India’s prestigious Padma awards: the Padma Shri in 1988, the Padma Bhushan in 2002, and the Padma Vibhushan in 2023. In 2009, he received a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album for his collaboration on the “Global Drum Project” with Mickey Hart and Giovanni Hidalgo.
