The Nagaon district administration initiated a significant eviction drive in Dhing on Tuesday, targeting nearly 2,000 bighas of encroached wetland. This operation is recognized as one of the most extensive anti-encroachment efforts in the region in recent memory.
According to official sources, the primary goal is to clear illegal occupations from three major beels within the Dhing Revenue Circle. This eviction drive forms part of a larger administrative initiative aimed at recovering government land and restoring ecologically important wetlands that have gradually been encroached upon over the years.
To facilitate a smooth and secure operation, the administration has deployed large contingents of police and paramilitary forces, with security camps strategically positioned at three locations across Dhing. Authorities confirmed that these security measures were established in advance to avert any potential law-and-order issues during the eviction process.
The eviction is occurring in various localities, including Salmabori, Bherbheri Beel, Tuktuki, Ahom Gaon, Kathaguri, Roumari Beel, Maira Dhaj, and Magurmari Beel. Officials stated that the drive commenced at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, following the completion of all necessary preparatory steps.
The district administration has planned the operation to be executed in phases over four days-December 16, 17, 19, and 20-enabling a systematic clearing of the encroached areas.
In remarks to the media, the Circle Officer of Dhing emphasized that the eviction drive aims to reclaim government-owned land and restore natural wetlands, which are crucial for flood mitigation and maintaining ecological balance in the area.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to proceed with the drive as scheduled and have urged public cooperation to ensure its successful implementation.
