A woman weaver in Khowang, Dibrugarh district, has handwoven a striking gamosa as a tribute to the late Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg, incorporating lyrics from nine of his best-known songs and nine of his memorable quotes into the traditional cloth. The piece, created by Dalimi Lahon Gogoi of Katakipukhuri Ahom Gaon, measures more than 25 feet and took nearly five months to complete; she began work on it about a month after Garg’s passing.
Woven on a traditional loom, the gamosa features lines from nine iconic songs — including Mayabini, Momor Sakiti Jole, Diya Ghurai Diya, Sapon Rongor Tikha Tumi, Roi Roi Binale and Andha Akash — alongside nine inspirational quotes associated with the singer. The lyrics and messages are integrated into floral motifs across the fabric, marrying text and traditional design.
Dalimi said the work is borne of deep admiration. “This tribute reflects my wish to keep Zubeen Garg’s legacy alive through Assam’s handloom heritage,” she told local residents, explaining that the intricate weaving was intended as a lasting homage to the singer.
The gamosa has drawn appreciation from neighbours and visitors, who describe it as a fitting memorial that combines Assam’s rich weaving tradition with the cultural legacy of one of its most influential musicians. For the local handloom community, the piece highlights how craft can preserve and celebrate popular cultural memory.
By embedding song lyrics and personal sayings into a time-honoured textile, the gamosa serves both as a work of art and a public expression of collective mourning and remembrance for fans across Assam.
