The United Nations has proclaimed May 22 The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.
In general, biodiversity refers to different kinds of life – animal, plants, fungi, microorganisms that can be found in a given area and their complex interaction that leads to support and balance in nature. The higher the variety, richer is the biodiversity.
Earth Ideas Foundation has been at the forefront of environmental awareness, since its inception. Members of the EIF team of Assam celebrated the day by carrying out awareness cum plantation drive, in SP office, Diphu, Karbi Anglong district, Assam.
Program was facilitated by Farooque Raza representing EIF and attended by locals and graced by spirited officers- Nahid Karishma (DySP, HQ) and Nilutpal Saikia (DySP, Probation) who doubled up as ambassadors of environment.
People were sensitized about importance of biodiversity and its conservation. Assam has been reeling under periodic spates of flooding and natural disasters that threatens man, animal and plant life. During the program it has also been pledged to plant some 500 saplings in different districts of Assam.
