Dr. Alima Akhtar, a Muslim woman doctor in Assam who has converted to Hinduism, has claimed that her life is under threat and her family is trying to forcefully marry her to an older Maulana. In a video posted on social media, she states that she converted to Hinduism voluntarily and has been away from her family due to their desire for her to have a “jannat” in her life by marrying the Maulana.
Working in the Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh, Dr. Akhtar has expressed that she is happy with her current life and wishes to stay away from her family. In response to her allegations, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has asked DGP G.P. Singh to conduct an investigation. A relative of Dr. Akhtar has stated that while they have no issues with her choice, her mother and father are ill and want to see her again.
