On Tuesday, police in Assam’s Morigaon district reported that a 25-year-old woman had been found dead in her home. Her husband, a security guard at a local cinema hall, informed the police that his wife was lying half-naked on the floor, indicating that she may have been raped before her death.
He said he had left for his night shift at 8pm on Monday, leaving the woman and her month-old infant alone in the house. When he returned on Tuesday morning, his wife was dead. Police believe she was strangled. The woman’s family has alleged that she was raped, and they are awaiting confirmation of their suspicions through the postmortem report.
In response to the tragedy, local residents took to the streets to demand that the police quickly investigate the crime and catch the perpetrators. One resident said, “We had noticed the movement of some unidentified men in our area. They have raped a mother and they deserve proper punishment. Police must immediately identify and arrest them.”
