On Wednesday, the Assam Police declared that the second stage of their effort to eradicate child marriage had begun with the apprehension of three people from the same family in Dhubri district. Navin Singh, the Superintendent of Police in Dhubri, asserted that the three suspects were charged under the POCSO and Child Marriage Act, and were arrested on Tuesday evening.
The apprehended individuals were Shahidur Islam, Abdul Karim, and Kasheme Ali. Shahidur was held responsible for marrying a 14-year-old girl two years ago, and the other two were his father and uncle. After appearing in court, the trio were put in jail.
Earlier this month, the Assam Chief Minister had stated that the state would be free of child marriage by 2026, and in February, the Assam Police initiated a campaign against the practice that resulted in over 5000 arrests.
