Tensions escalated outside the Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH) as members of the Hmar Association protested against the Indian government’s decision to airlift deceased bodies from the helipad at Masimpur. The situation has drawn significant attention, highlighting the ongoing conflict and emotional distress within the community.

The government has arranged for helicopters to transport the deceased, but members of the Hmar Association are adamant that the bodies should be taken by road to Churachandpur instead. This demand stems from concerns regarding the handling of the bodies and the broader implications of the ongoing tensions in Manipur.
The Cachar police have deployed additional forces to manage the situation, with Superintendent of Police (SP) Cachar making it clear that the matter is primarily under the jurisdiction of the Manipur police and the Ministry of Home Affairs. Consequently, the SP stated that he could not provide any written assurances to the protesters regarding their demands.
During the protests, Hmar Association representatives expressed their distress and frustration over the lack of communication and assurance from authorities. One female member of the association revealed that Thomas, the Additional Superintendent of Police (Addl SP) of Jiribam, had given a written assurance that the bodies would be transported to Churachandpur and that neither the Manipur police nor the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) would be on board the helicopter. This promise has led to the loading of the bodies into coffins, as the protesters seek to uphold the dignity of their deceased loved ones.
The Hmar Association’s insistence on ground transportation reflects a broader sentiment within the community, emphasizing the need for respect and recognition during a time of mourning. The ongoing protests highlight deeper issues of trust and communication between the local population and government authorities.
As the situation unfolds, observers are left wondering how this conflict will be resolved and what steps will be taken to address the concerns of the Hmar community. The protests outside SMCH serve as a reminder of the fragile state of peace in the region and the critical importance of dialogue between authorities and affected communities.
