In an operation that has sent shockwaves through the region, authorities in Khatkhati, under the Bokajan sub-division, have successfully apprehended a notorious supplier, seizing a sizable quantity of narcotics during a routine checkpoint inspection. This event marks a significant victory for law enforcement in their relentless battle against the scourge of drug trafficking that plagues the Assam-Nagaland border areas.

The Khatkhati area, which has been a hotbed for illegal narcotics, arms, and contraband like Burmese supari (betel nuts), is often exploited as a safe corridor by smugglers due to its strategic location. Over time, traffickers have continually adapted their methods to evade capture, utilizing luxury vehicles, cargo trucks, and even pedestrian routes to transport drugs. However, their cunning tactics have consistently met with the vigilant eyes of the Karbi Anglong police force, who have thwarted numerous such attempts.
On this occasion, the arrest occurred during a nocturnal operation conducted around 8 p.m., when the vigilant police team, led by Circle Inspector Manjit Terang of Bokajan and Sub-Inspectors Deepak Lahon and Swamadhan Swargiary, along with the staff of Khatkhati Police Station and the support of the 20th Battalion CRPF, carried out a stringent check of a night bus (bearing registration number AS 25 AC 0094), traveling from Dimapur towards Tinsukia.
During the search, the authorities made a startling discovery. Hidden within a trekking bag belonging to a passenger, they uncovered 13 soap boxes concealing 15479 grams of heroin and two packets containing 1172.42 grams of opium. The passenger, identified as Mankhanlal Guite (23) from Manipur, was allegedly masquerading as a regular traveler while secretly transporting the illicit substances.
The seized narcotics were documented and taken into custody in the presence of Karbi District Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Nayan Moni Barman, with neutral witnesses corroborating the confiscation. The swift and decisive operation has not only removed a significant amount of drugs from potential street distribution but also highlights the effectiveness of the police surveillance and intervention strategies in the region.
The implications of this seizure are far-reaching. It disrupts the flow of drugs that could have devastated countless lives and communities, while sending a clear message to those involved in the illegal drug trade that the border areas are no longer safe havens for their operations. The arrest of Mankhanlal Guite also serves as a cautionary tale for traffickers who assume that by blending in with the general population, they can successfully bypass the law.
The police department has announced that investigations are ongoing to further dismantle the networks behind this trafficking operation. This bust is a testament to the department’s commitment to eradicating the drug menace and its unyielding efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of society.
The fight against drug trafficking is a complex and evolving challenge that requires constant vigilance and adaptability by law enforcement agencies. The success of the Khatkhati checkpoint operation demonstrates the potential impact of strategic checkpoints and collaborative police work in combating illicit activities. As traffickers innovate, so too must the authorities continue to employ a combination of intelligence, technology, and public cooperation to stay one step ahead.
This recent bust in Khatkhati is not just a win for the local police but a victory for the entire community, which can feel a little safer knowing that a major supplier of narcotics has been put behind bars and a large shipment of drugs has been kept off the streets. As the investigation proceeds, it is hoped that this will lead to further breakthroughs in the fight against drug trafficking and contribute to a decline in the region’s illegal drug trade.
