In West Karbi Anglong’s Baithalangso, there is a tense situation at the office of the General Manager of the Karbi Langpi Hydroelectric Project located in Langeri. The main gate of the General Manager’s office has been locked as part of a vigorous protest by the Karbi Students’ Association. The protesters are vehemently opposing the General Manager, who arrived at the protest site.

This protest by the Karbi Students’ Association is centered around the dismissal of 39 local youths who have been employed as security guards in the project for the past 17 years.
All those who were dismissed from their jobs were appointed by the Electricity Board and handed over to a private contractor for management. However, on the first of July, without any prior notice, the Lengeri office of the Karbi Langpi Hydroelectric Project announced that all of them had been dismissed.
The then Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Power Minister Pradyut Bordoloi had assured permanent employment to the local youths who donated their land and property for the construction of the hydroelectric project. However, contrary to this promise, these local youths have now lost their temporary security guard jobs and are left directionless.
